Today is a holiday in New Zealand that is not shared with the rest of the World. It is Queen’s Birthday.
Although the reasons for having an official Queen’s Birthday a somewhat obvious the exact day is somewhat questionable. The video below shares my thoughts about the day and below that again is two links to some useful info about the occasion.

Second of June and we're talking about Emergency contact numbers.
It amazed me that the number for the local police station was so difficult to find that by the time I came across it, buried in the phone book, the need for it was gone.
So what are the important but not emergency numbers you may need in your phone?
Do you have an ICE number in your phone? And whose number will be called?
Are there other important numbers that you store in your phone.

If we look into a learning organization such as a school, teachers are often encouraged to collaborate with each other to improve their practices, support one another and further develop their professional knowledge. At the next level is sharing these learning experiences that the teachers are developing within their own contexts with teachers outside their own school. The benefits are priceless, including thinking outside our little box.

The benefits are priceless, including thinking outside our little box.As part of my M.Ed. on e-learning and digital technologies in education at the University of Canterbury, I had the opportunity to collaborate online with many teachers and other professionals that were coming from various and different contexts, sharing our ideas, experiences and reflections and of course supporting each other in our learning journey. Experiencing the value of sharing in the ‘safe’ online environment of my courses, I was further motivated and encouraged to start using other social media to extend my learning experience, connecting with even more people.
This is where I realized the important role of social media in today’s world. It’s all about sharing our knowledge, our practice, our experiences with other teachers, other professionals, in other contexts; using blogs, wikis, videos, tweets and so many other ways, depending on what better suits the individual, this is what helps us to think outside our own silos and move our thinking and practice lots of steps further.
There are countless examples of teachers and other education professionals in New Zealand and elsewhere that share their educational practices, ideas, research and other resources through blogs, wikis, twitter, podcasts etc, not concerned about keeping their materials for themselves. Acknowledging the value of sharing, they consider other professionals that can be inspired from their own practices, engage in constructive dialogue, reflect on their own contexts from different points of view, experiment with new tools and approaches.
This plays an important role in changing what it means to be a good educator. In a society where knowledge itself has lost its previous ‘glory’, as the web enables instant access to what was previously held by the experts, teachers and schools have to offer more than teaching materials; it’s not about the resources, but about inspiring others and be inspired – moving beyond knowing the facts and creating new knowledge through collaboration. Isn’t this what we want for our students? Why not for us as well then? Practicing what we preach... so keep sharing!

Celia Lashlie talking about boys...
Celia Lashlie continues to be a quality speaker when on the topic of how dad’s should step up and mum’s step back if we’re going to stem the flood of boys ending up in prison.
Made wrong
Given time and space
Far too often we exclaim “this is happening NOW” “Get your coat on, shoes, get in the car… let’s go, let’s go, let’s go” This approach is poor people management and when those people are boys… oh dear.Instead, place things in a time frame. “Dinner is in 15 mins”, “ We’ll be leaving at the end of that programme.”
Boys can and do think reflectively but they may need more time, more support than your average daughter.
Tell truth to boys
Finding the simply language that matches the age of your son, your pupils, can be tricky. But telling the truth, putting boys ‘in the picture’ allows them to process the world better. We as adults have a wealth of knowledge and wisdom that our boys seem not able to access. The way we talk to boys needs clarity and conviction Truth wins out with boys over embellishment or exaggeration.Think then Talk
Boys process and then talk or explain or ask as necessary. Women on the other hand talk out loud. Celia did this demonstration and my words would not do it justice but basically women, mums, teachers, talk through an issue and process it simultaneously. That’s a whole lot of talking that, to a boy, is irrelevant. No wonder they stop listening.Digging down inside
Over the years, boys pick up on everything, they may not be able to articulate it but it is all stored deep inside. All we need is the questions (not too many) and the time to allow them to process what is asked and articulate an answer. Boys come across as lazy but the one thing they have access to is that knowledge that women WILL jump in and answer their own question before any thought is required on his part.Give him the time to process, make him aware it is HE who has to answer, make time for it, let him know you’re not going anywhere until he’s answered – take a newspaper if you think it’ll take a while – maybe not.

Diary 3 Still April 2011
Another week has nearly passed. It has been a busy weekend for me as I have taken some time out to venture into the ‘Easter Sales’ and address an issue that has, for me, been most pressing.
A new computer.
I did not intend to go out of my way to get a MAC but that is what I have ended up with. With my aging PC it was coming down to ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ it collapsed and died on me.
As I am looking at this new Youtube vlogging/ reading project then editing quick clear video is a must. I don’t want my evenings and weekends dominated by huge amounts of time taken for editing.
So iMovie appears to be the way to go.
Enjoy the process in the video.
Having said all that I still can’t let go of Microsoft Office. Some things are too dear tomy heart.

Diary 2: Thoughts on travel book choice and coffee
This week saw me travel to the Hawkes Bay. I got an opportunity to catch up with my good friend Matt. I continue to battle with the computer, the software and the camera. However, I have managed to achieve a far better quality of video than Diary one.
I managed to complete the first production this week, I even uploaded it to Youtube... unfortunately I can’t let you see just yet due to a time delay with other parties. Follow the link to subscribe and see it first. I’ll be releasing it 24 hours ahead of my usual distribution channels.

Vlogging is not as easy as people make out
It all very well knowing what equipment you need to begin your vlog.
Those that follow this blog regularly are familiar with my first attempt at a vlog post which sort to lay out what I had in mind.
To reiterate it there are three main components:
The great thing about these holidays is that I get a chance to go shopping and find what I think I need.
Referring to the above list it appears I need:
One of the highlights this week was helping put together a Grammar quiz. It is designed for a class of Year 6 students, identified as ‘Kauri 3’. However, the content is appropriate for any class to share on their blog as the embed code is regularly available. Try the quiz out below and see how you go.Good Luck!

Those that follow this blog regularly are familiar with my first attempt at a vlog post which sort to lay out what I had in mind.
To reiterate it there are three main components:
- The ‘online diary’ vlog posting – which I suspect to be weekly
- What I am referring to as ‘Book Corner’ (unless someone comes up with a cooler title and leaves it in the comments) which is basically a smattering of regular people I happen to come across talking about their favourite book and why they like it.
- Finally there is the production side (which is proving had to get off the ground) But it basically focuses on a new book that has an engaging beginning and would make a nice short clip to enthuse us about stepping out of our usual reading pattern and trying something different.
- The Software editing lost the picture but inserted the sound.
- The file type camera B used was not accepted by said software.
- Backup software tool saved file type in a stupidly pixelated resolution.
The great thing about these holidays is that I get a chance to go shopping and find what I think I need.
Referring to the above list it appears I need:
- A new Camera with decent mic
- Decent spec computer – I’m not too keen to go the MAC way but if needs must.
- Movie Editing software Am leaning towards Sony Vegas or Adobe.
