Nominate a New Zealander for TED

New Zealand Education leads the way globally. I am sure that there are innovative and engaging teachers across New Zealand who have a story to share.
TED 2012 are launching TED ED next year and they are wanting you to nominate educators that would be willing to share with the world. In their blog post they write:
For the upcoming TED conference TED2012: Full Spectrum we’re looking for 10 of the world’s best teachers to take the TED stage during a special session we’re calling The Classroom. We’re accepting nominations to help track these people down. You can nominate yourself or a remarkable educator we should know about — who doesn’t have to be a teacher in the traditional sense.”

For full details follow the link to the TED Blog.

Identifying the HOW in Education

  • What is the model for a brand new school?
  • What are impacts of building a life of memories?
  • What is the real impact of homework?
  • What is the value of evidence?
  • What should the next 4 weeks look like, curriculumwise?
  • Do these messages resonate with us in New Zealand?

Julian Treasure: Creating a conscious, listening world

Julian Treasure speaks in Edinburgh about the slow demise of listening. He offers five ways to listen.
Below are the summary titles of the five but it really does make more sense is you…. You know… listen to him.

  • Silence – Just three minutes of silence a day will help reset out listening skills.
  • Mixer – When you’re in a noisy environment pick out the threads of sound you hear.
  • Savouring – listen for the mundane sounds and savour the rhythm it has.
  • Listening position- Move your position of listening.
  • RASA – You’ll just have to listen to Julian for this one.

The key message here is you must listen consciously to live fully.

Dave Meslin on TED.com

I would have liked to have spent time reflecting on this TED Talk but to be honest I’m too selfish and frankly, have better things to do with my time than do your thinking for you. Besides, I only have rudimentary education myself, these are weighty issues and I’m too stupid to process them.
So feel free to open reflective discussion in the blog comments below, unless, like me you’re too lazy.

John Wooden: successful teaching

This TED Talk by the late, great John Wooden is thought provoking and inspirational for any teacher, anytime, especially at this beginning of a new school year.

John Wooden's definition of success:
'Peace of mind attained only though self-satifaction in knowing you made the effort to the best of which you are capable.'
John Wooden's thoughts on  character and reputation:
Reputation is what you are percieved to be your character is what you really are.
