About this seminar

Since the quakes, many organisations around Christchurch have lost staff and students, lost buildings, lost files and systems, and yet have re-emerged on shared sites, often operating in innovative and inspiring new ways. The quakes have not only triggered the temporary breakdown of conventional organisational structures, but also led to the spontaneous emergence of self-organisation, individuals and groups responding to the threat and the opportunities to support each other and create innovative solutions to the challenging situation.

This presentation will explore these phenomena. In particular, it will consider whether such self organisation can only occur post a traumatic event, or whether it is it possible for organisations to foster this level of self motivation, creativity, and generosity in its members (staff, students, communities) throughout its 'normal' operations?

It is four years since the launch of The New Zealand Curriculum Online web site. 35,000 teachers a month now visit this site. How are schools sustaining the momentum of curriculum review and development?

At this breakfast, we aim to introduce a feast of curriculum resources available online to support these conversations and decisions. We will guide you to a number of important curriculum research, learning resources, and tools. We will talk about ways schools take these online resources and use them effectively to guide curriculum conversations and thinking.

• What recent research is available to inform school curriculum development?
• How might schools use curriculum stories to challenge, inform and inspire conversations and decisions?
• How does NZC Online support learning about the NZC principles?

Using cross-sector examples of social media in action, DK will illustrate how organisations are utilising social media to humanise their brand. He will also explore how others are leveraging the power of social principles to achieve wider learning opportunities including the ability to connect with experts across the world.

What is the value of this to educators?

DK will demonstrate that, while Twitter and Facebook are two examples of social media, there are many more platforms to utilise, to adapt and adopt. He will also show what's really changed for young people, outline the opportunities for educators and clarify how this challenges the traditional model of education.

This CORE breakfast session will:

The Commission for Financial Literacy and Retirement Income promotes financial education from 5-105. The vision is for all New Zealanders to be financially sorted throughout their lives. The more New Zealanders know about money and how to manage it, the better placed they are to improve their standard of living throughout their lives, including in retirement.

Financial literacy is a vital life skill. The provision of financial literacy knowledge within schools is essential if our students are to participate, contribute and function fully both within New Zealand society and the world beyond.

The National Strategy for Financial Literacy has as one of its platforms "Working Together". While we know that financial education should be happening within schools, in reality is it? Only by working together will we successfully lift our levels of financial literacy.

This CORE breakfast session will:

• discuss why we should prioritise the teaching of financial education
• share cross-curricula examples of financial education
• explore the learning frameworks and resources available
• discuss approaches being used in schools around the world
• introduce the financial literacy component of the PISA study

This session will be particularly useful for school leaders and classroom practitioners at all levels with a role in developing and supporting the inclusion of financial education within classroom programmes.

The trend towards highly capable, portable technologies in student hands is growing. Such technology is shrinking, capabilities converging and battery life extending. Increasingly some students have access to more powerful technologies than their schools can provide or their teachers have access to. Coupled with a huge growth in the number of portable and web enabled applications, all of these trends are reshaping the classroom as we know it. Add to this the concept of Cloud computing and we have the potential to do some interesting things in the classroom.
In his presentation, Paul will investigate these trends, offer some insights into the future and provide some ideas as to how teachers can capitalise on these opportunities.

This session will be particularly useful for school leaders and classroom practitioners, those with responsibility for developing and supporting the implementation of eLearning within schools and teachers with an interest in extending the opportunities presented by mobile learning and cloud computing.

Bio:

Paul Rodley is ICT Director at Christ's College. Paul has an interest in mobile learning and in particular the way that cloud computing can enhance portable technologies in the classroom. She has led the Competent Learners' project as it has followed a sample of students from the wider Wellington region from their final early childhood education days through to age 20. She is currently co-editing an international handbook on student engagement. She also researches the impact of educational policy on schools and learning opportunities, including the ways in which schools can engage students.

The Competent Learners' project provides a rare opportunity to follow the development of individual students through primary and secondary schooling. In the age-20 phase of the project, we see out how earlier experiences and performance levels on both cognitive and attitudinal measures related to some of the Key Competencies, influence secondary school engagement, achievement, and what happens post-school. We also see the kinds of learning opportunities and support, in and out of school, that can make a positive difference.

• Question the reality of 'second chance education' for those with low engagement in secondary school or low qualification success

Bullying has received significant media and political attention recently. Many of the high-profile bullying cases bought to public attention have involved forms of cyber bullying. NetSafe's research now indicates that cyber bullying is one of the most commonly distressing challenges faced by New Zealand young people, making it a critical issue for educator's to understand.
This presentation will:

• Explore what is meant by "cyber bullying" including the forms it can take and just who is doing the bullying

• Discuss the types of cyber bullying that causes distress

• Identify the types of interventions that students say have helped them resolve serious cyber bullying situations

• Discuss what peers and adults can do to help prevent and resolve cyber bullying experiences

John Fenaughty is NetSafe's Research Manager responsible for utilizing knowledge to inform practice.  He has recently completed a PhD in Psychology exploring how young people in New Zealand manage challenging situations when using online and related mobile technologies. He has managed NetSafe's role in the establishment of a National Cyber bullying Taskforce. During the past five years at NetSafe John has worked with schools and stakeholders across the education sector to produce anti-bullying resources for primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

Sean Lyons is NetSafe's Development Manager and Director of NetSafe Labs - the "production house" of NetSafe's resources. He has worked both in the IT sector and in the secondary education sector (as a science and IT teacher in Auckland). He has developed a range of online applications and websites to assist adults to understand the online world in which young people are now living. Sean's areas of interest include social marketing, user interface design, instructional design and the uses of social web applications.

Cyber-Safety: What can you and your school do?

Brett Lee is fast becoming a leading expert on Cyber-safety and what young people need to be aware of while navigating social media sites.
His unique experience in the cyber-crime unit enables him to share with teachers and parents some of the dangers facing students today and some of the simple precautions they can take.
