Wonderful things outside this window

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.
One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.
His bed was next to the room's only window.
The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..
Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days, weeks and months passed.
One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.
She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.
It faced a blank wall..
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.
The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.
She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'

Kawerau Intermediate and Kawerau College to close? Or morph?

Tragic news for the logging community from the Bay of Plenty when the Board of Trustees of Kawerau Intermediate and Kawerau College received on Friday 11 November a letter from the Minister of Education notifying them that she intends to proceed with the closure of Kawerau Intermediate and Kawerau College at the end of 2012 and create a new Year 7-13 school on the site of Kawerau College.

There has been much protest and discussion around the issue including a long review that drew protests from the Bay of Plenty town - including an angry demonstration on the steps of Parliament - Education Minister Anne Tolley has opted to merge Kawerau's college and intermediate. But wait instead of a being a complete merger, there will be two separate campuses - intermediate and high school.

So, let me get this straight: We’re closing two schools due to falling rolls and creating one school… but over two campuses?
Wait, maybe its not so tragic as they will get two new campuses for their two old schools – It’s a little confusing, to say the least.

Update:

Schools wrangle tipped as 'huge election issue'

0.4 by Mike A Lancaster

It's a brave new world. 'My name is Kyle Straker. And I don't exist anymore.'

If I told you what 0.4 referred to it would spoil the story.
If I told you who Mike Lancaster it may spoil the story, too.

Suffice to say that 0.4 is aimed at the teen reader market but is well worth reading even beyond, is science fiction… or science fact depending on your point of view.

It is the story of Kyle Straker a messed up kid from as messed up home… some weird stuff happens which either makes the family less or more messed up depending on your point of view. Whichever your opinion regarding the family there is no denying the fact that Kyle Straker ends up even MORE messed up.

But then, in the end, it all works out for the best… or it doesn’t. Depending on your point of view.

Now that I’ve thoroughly confused you I need to say it is well worth reading, whether you are a teen or a not-so teen it is definitely worth reading. It’ll blow your mind, in a good way or a bad way, depending on your point of view.

Diary 3 Still April 2011

Another week has nearly passed. It has been a busy weekend for me as I have taken some time out to venture into the ‘Easter Sales’ and address an issue that has, for me, been most pressing.

A new computer.

I did not intend to go out of my way to get a MAC but that is what I have ended up with. With my aging PC it was coming down to ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ it collapsed and died on me.

As I am looking at this new Youtube vlogging/ reading project then editing quick clear video is a must. I don’t want my evenings and weekends dominated by huge amounts of time taken for editing.

So iMovie appears to be the way to go.

Enjoy the process in the video.

Having said all that I still can’t let go of Microsoft Office. Some things are too dear tomy heart.

Enjoy your week ;-)

This is the second interview for Book Corner.

Diary 2: Thoughts on travel book choice and coffee

This week saw me travel to the Hawkes Bay. I got an opportunity to catch up with my good friend Matt. I continue to battle with the computer, the software and the camera. However, I have managed to achieve a far better quality of video than Diary one.

I managed to complete the first production this week, I even uploaded it to Youtube... unfortunately I can’t let you see just yet due to a time delay with other parties. Follow the link to subscribe and see it first. I’ll be releasing it 24 hours ahead of my usual distribution channels.

What software and computer would you recommend for these video productions.

Ken Robinson on 'Finding your Inner Passion'

Ken Robinson on Passion from The School of Life on Vimeo.

Some highlights from Ken Robinson’s talk about passion:
  • We are all born with extraordinary capability.
  • We aim too low and succeed. Rather than ‘shooting for the stars’
  • We need to find that magic spot where our natural talent meets our personal passion.
  • We need to know ourselves better.
  • Finding purpose in our work is essential to knowing who we really are.

Sir Ken Robinson is a leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources, working with governments and the world’s leading cultural organizations. Born in Liverpool, he was Director of The Arts Project (1985-89), and is Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Warwick. He was knighted in 2003 for his contribution to education and the arts. Recent publications include Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative (2001) and The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything (2009).

Dave Meslin on TED.com

I would have liked to have spent time reflecting on this TED Talk but to be honest I’m too selfish and frankly, have better things to do with my time than do your thinking for you. Besides, I only have rudimentary education myself, these are weighty issues and I’m too stupid to process them.
So feel free to open reflective discussion in the blog comments below, unless, like me you’re too lazy.

Check your spelling against Webster's Dictionary

I have been reading ‘Mother Tongue’ by Bill Bryson.
The book appeared in my other post about Books Educators will LIKE to read. Interestingly the Qwiki for Webster’s Dictionary appeared in my inbox.
Noah Webster was quick to claim credit for creating words.

But spelling is very tricky. Mr Bryson runs a test with his readers to see if they can spot the spelling mistakes, check his list of words below, how many can you spot? No cheating. Leave a comment and I’ll post the answers in a week.

Which of the following words are mispelled?
  • supercede
  • conceed
  • procede
  • idiosyncracy
  • concensus
  • accomodate
  • impressario
  • rhythym
  • opthalmologist
  • diptheria
  • anamoly
  • afficianado
  • caesarian
  • grafitti

Well, I’ve finally decided to do something constructive with my Youtube channel. The title of this post may give a little clue but ... watch the video to find out.
If you have any suggestions leave a comment either here on the blog post, under the Youtube video itself  or if you’re feeling less adventurous just in the Facebook stream.

I have also created a page here for listing all the videos I’ve created... not that there are a lot at the moment but hopefully it’ll grow.
First interview is arriving shortly...

Introducing myself

As part of the Core Education staff meeting I have been asked to create a short introduction to I to share a little about myself and my work so far.

Rewriting New Zealand history

"You know they have suffered as a result of New Zealand's ignorance of who they are, where they came from and their history."
It seems that a correction has been made in the School Journal regarding the origins and characteristics of the Moriori people. And long it has been in coming.
The version of events surrounding this issue appears to still be divided. Long it has been used as an apologists argument to support  ‘natural selection’ process within New Zealand. Argument going something like this: “Don’t witter on the injustice of European occupation of New Zealand over the Maori when you did exactly the same, and worse, to the Moriori centuries before.”
Obviously, using one genocide to argue and debate another is nonsense.
What is past is passed. To be ashamed of, or defend, the decisions and culture of our ancestors is counter-productive. So says I:
  • A member of the British Empire, whose people slaughtered ‘ savage natives’ across every continent in the world.
  • An Englishman whose people drove the Scots and Irish into famine of the mid 1800’s.
  • Whose fore-fathers shed French blood for 100 years through the use of the longbow of the 13th and 14th centuries.
  • Of Saxon decent, trampling Picts, Celts and Britons in our bid to reach the ‘western sea’.
  • Of Roman decent, whose ancestors conquered the known world and tried desperately to destroy the Christian faith in blood sports of the arena.
  • I am of Homosapien decent, whose descendants out thought, out fought, and out lived the Neanderthal people.
My history, all our history, is riddled with pain, bloodshed, injustice and war. All of it is despicable and incomprehensible against our 21st century sensibilities and ‘political-correctness’. Just let me know in which century I am permitted to cease guilt-ing over the decisions and direction my forbearers took.
Let us move forward together, having taken the greatest gift our history has to offer...

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”  George Santayana

What's the plan... Len?

"Never thought about it before. Should have, didn't."
The words of Len Brown, Mayor of Auckland ,as he calls for a "preparedness day" in the light of the Christchurch quake.
Schools, colleges, and other institutuions could take a leaf from Len’s book and use the opportunity to educate students and parents. Everyone needs to get ready for a natural disaster in New Zealand and this is the opportunity that we can all take to put ‘the plan’ together. As the civil defence ad says ‘You could be anywhere.”
Including school so every family needs to know what to do.
  • What do we take with us?
  • Where to shelter in an earthquake, flood, volcanic eruption or storm?
  • How to evacuate and where to meet?
  • Who is responsible for getting the kids?
  • Where survival items and first aid kits are located, and who is responsible for checking essential items.

Educators also need to take a lead here. What’s the Plan Stan? is an initiative which aims to support teachers to develop their students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes to respond to and prepare for an emergency.
